In 2015, irrigation upgrade works valued at up to $100m were carried out in the GMID. It was one of the biggest works program for several years for the modernisation project.
It saw 73 manual channel systems replaced with state-of-the-art automated delivery systems. In addition, about 30km of channel was upgraded to reduce water losses from leaks and seepage.
In addition, 56 pipelines were built to deliver water to farmers more efficiently. This boost to local economies is valued at about $6.2m per week or $1.25m per day, based on 80 working days.
