Winter Works 2016

The Connection Project’s peak construction and in-channel works usually take place from May to August each year. It’s the only time during the year when the channels are drained for maintenance. It’s a relatively short period of time compared to other irrigation districts in Victoria. Smaller scale works and metering are also undertaken throughout the year.

In 2016, work to reduce water losses due to leaks and seepage will be carried out along more than 21km of channels in the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District (GMID). This is part of a program of Winter Works worth more than $45m, which this year will include work on a number of special projects including the Swan Hill Modernisation Project, Box Creek Weir and Fish Lock.

The 2016 Winter Works will include:

  • Installation of up to 200 new meters
  • Up to 26km of pipelines to be installed
  • Works taking place across all shires in the GMID – Campaspe, Gannawarra, Greater Shepparton, Loddon, Moira and Swan Hill; and
  • Channel remediation taking place at 13 sites, automation at 45 sites and pipelines to be built at 13 sites.

The large-scale works program is a win for irrigators, the environment and the community. The works will support regional economies by generating work for local contractors and businesses.

Local drivers are also urged to be vigilant on the roads due to increased traffic, slow earth moving equipment and the operation of heavy vehicles.
